Yes this is HOT ROD not Four Wheeler, but these little Broncos are just as hot as any C10 and twice as expensive. You might have seen the SoCal speed shop build hotrod.com we covered on the HOT ROD Network and in the magazine. And you might have also noticed that other people have noticed and are starting to consider these short-wheelbase V8 trucks hot rods in their own right.
Colin Smith would agree, and let himself be coerced by his brother-in-law to come see his first Power Tour in his 1973 Bronco. Colin bought it in high school and did a frame off in college before driving it daily for two years in Atlanta, Georgia. Eventually, the southern summers were too much for the factory A/C and Colin relented and bought another driver. The truck sat in the garage and was driven on summer days.
In 2009, Colin brought the truck back out and added the half-doors and removed the top, lifting it for some four-wheeling at an ORV park near the Outer Banks. He left the factory 302 and C4 transmission but stripped the Sport package and added an HEI distributor and power brakes so it would be reliable enough for the wife to drive and the family to ride in.
Today, the 1991 Ford Fiesta paint job is holding up and aside from a bad fuel filter, is showing his 14-year-old son and 10-year-old nephew a good time on the Power Tour.
"There is a huge variety of people on the Tour, young and old with all kinds of builds. I wanted the boys to see that," Colin says. "I think they are never going to forget this experience. I guess we are coming back next year."
