Buyers of the 2020 Toyota 86 with a manual gearbox can specify a
new TRD Handling Package for making the coupe an even sharper handling
machine.
The pieces for the TRD Handling Package come from last year's 86 TRD
Special Edition. The improved handling comes from a set of Sachs
dampers, and the car rides on a set of 18-inch wheels with Michelin
Pilot Sport 4 tires. Braking comes courtesy of Brembo parts with
12.83-inch rotors in front and 12.44-inch stoppers at the back.
All 2020 examples of the 86 get an updated 7-inch infotainment
system. The tech now supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The stereo
also gets Clari-Fi technology that makes "compressed digital music
formats sound more open and natural," according to Toyota.
The
86's powertrain carries over from before. A 2.0-liter boxer
four-cylinder makes 205 horsepower (153 kilowatts) and 156 pound-feet
(212 Newton-meters) of torque with the manual gearbox or 200 hp (149 kW)
and 151 lb-ft (205 Nm) with the six-speed automatic.
The previously covered Toyota 86 Hakone Edition
(above) also joins the range for 2020. Taking the name from the
famous Hakone Skyline highway in Japan, the special model has Hakone
Green exterior paint and 17-inch bronze wheels. The interior has a
two-tone mix of black-and-tan Alcantara with contrast stitching. There
are no mechanical tweaks.
Rumors suggest that Toyota and Subaru are working together on the next generation of the 86 and BRZ. The coupes allegedly ride on a version of Toyota's TGNA platform
but would remain rear-wheel drive. Switching underpinnings might mean
the new models would move to a Toyota-sourced powertrain, too. A debut
date for the pair is still a mystery.
