Refreshing or Revolting: 2020 Audi RS 6 Avant

Enthusiasts can rejoice, because we're finally getting the 2020 Audi RS 6 Avant next year. The latest generation of Audi's super wagon packs 591 hp, making it a good match for the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S wagon.  But is its design an improvement over its predecessor? We think so, but let's analyze below so you can decide for yourself.

Unlike previous models, the latest Audi RS 6 Avant is easy to distinguish from a standard A6 thanks to its massive blacked-out grille and lower front fascia openings. The lack of chrome adds to the 2020 RS 6's aggression, especially when paired with the angular headlights.

From the side, the extended side sills on the 2020 Audi RS 6 Avant give you a hint that it's no ordinary family hauler. The massive alloy wheels and brake pads also hint at the RS 6 Avant's performance credentials and breaks up an otherwise subtle exterior. Subtlety was the outgoing RS 6's game; the new one eschews that and turns up the wick with more obvious clues of its capabilities. Should a 2020 RS 6 Avant leave you in its dust, all you'll see are its massive dual exhaust pipes and the reshaped lower rear fascia that you won't mistake for anything else.

Inside the 2020 Audi RS 6 Avant, you get a clean layout featuring Audi's latest MMI interface with two large touchscreens. Gone is the freestanding tablet-like screen and knob-based controls of the outgoing RS 6. The traditional gauge cluster has also been replaced by Audi's Virtual Cockpit system, which utilizes a 12.3-inch digital display to show all relevant information.

Powering the 2020 Audi RS 6 Avant is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 with 591 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. It puts power down via a sport-tuned eight-speed automatic transmission and a rear-biased Quattro all-wheel-drive system that spits power 40/60 front to rear via a mechanical center differential. If you pick the optional carbon ceramic brakes, the RS 6 Avant's overall curb weight is reduced by 75 pounds. A height-adjustable air suspension come standard and you can also opt for an RS sport suspension. Rear-wheel steering is available if you opt for the Dynamic or Dynamic Plus packages. Audi claims that the 2020 RS 6 Avant can hit 60 mph in under 3.6 seconds on the way to a top speed of 190 mph.
