Is your steering wheel starting to show its age? Rips? Tears? Leather peeling? Stitching unraveling? Before you go out and buy a new wheel or send it off to have it reupholstered, hold up. There's a cheaper, quicker, and easier way to make it look like new again.
Road & Track contributor Bozi Tatarevic recently had the problem with the wheel on his 2016 Subaru WRX sedan. The top portion of the rim was degrading, so he wanted to fix it. To do so, Tatarevic purchased a high-quality wheel wrap online from a company called Auto Interior Technic, which specializes on wheel wraps on all sorts of cars. Unlike the cheap $10 wraps you find at your local auto parts store, wraps like this are custom-cut to fit perfectly over your wheel.
According to Tatarevic, the kit for his WRX cost about $80—not cheap, but still less than buying a new wheel or sending it off to get the leather completely redone.
The package comes with all the tools and instructions you need to install the new wrap. Simple directions make it easy for anyone to install in about an hour's time, whether or not you've worked with interior trim installation before. Tatarevic walks us through the entire process, start to finish, in the video above.
